Des Moines completed its weekend sweep of the Gamblers with a 3-0 trouncing victory Saturday evening at the Buccaneer Arena. With its fourth consecutive loss, Green Bay fell to 12-8-5 on the season and 1-3-1 over its five games in the month of December.
Though Gamblers goaltender Jared Rutledge faced an onslaught of shots (13) in the game’s first period, he successfully saved each and kept the game tied 0-0 after the first period. Green Bay forced just nine shots in the opening frame, but returned to tally 13 of its own in the second period. But the Gamblers failed to convert. Meanwhile, Des Moines forward Tanner Karty record the game’s first goal midway through the period, establishing a 1-0 lead in favor of the Buccaneers.
Things only snowballed from that point on.
In the game’s final period, Green Bay out-shot Des Moines 10-5, but again were unable to sling those shots past Des Moines goaltender Billy Christopolous, who saved all 32 of the Gamblers’ shots in the game. Michael Marnell and Danny Elser added goals of their own for good measure before the midway point of the contest, eventually giving the Buccaneers the 3-0 regulation victory.
It was the first time this season in which the Gamblers have converted less than five percent of their shots into goals in consecutive games.
Green Bay will travel to Dubuque Dec. 27 to take on the Saints.
